What is GameInput?

GameInput as the name suggests is an input API, usually used for gaming. It is installed on your Windows computer by default and is used as a support for gaming input devices. Because of the fact that it is a core component of Windows, you can not actually remove it from your system. Even if you succeed in uninstalling the tool, Windows will download it again as soon as it restarts. As of late, GameInput is causing issues on a lot of Windows PCs. It basically crashes the computer, not only that, it sometimes even causes BSOD.

Fix Microsoft GameInput crashing PC

If Microsoft GameInput is crashing your Windows 11/10 PC, try the following solutions. Let us talk about them in detail.

1] Rename GameInput

If you don’t want GameInput and are fed up with the constant crashes, you can rename the GameInput folder, and then if you feel like it’s needed, just rename the folders again. So, first of all, open File Explorer and click on View > Show > tick Hidden items. Now, go to the following location in File Explorer. Look for the following two folders.

Microsoft.GamingServices_4.66.2001.0_neutral_~_8wekyb3d8bbweMicrosoft.GamingServices_4.66.2001.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe

Rename and just add the prefix ‘X’. So, the name would be something like XMicrosoft.GamingServices_4.66.2001.0_neutral_~_8wekyb3d8bbwe. Note: You may have a different version, but Microsoft.GamingServices is what we are targeting here. There can be some other Microsoft.GamingServices folder, so, change them as well. Hopefully, now you won’t see the error message and abrupt crashes.

2] Run SFC and DISM

You may face the issue in question if your system files are corrupted. We can repair the game files using two commands to resolve the issue. First of all, open Command Prompt as an administrator and run the following command. If that doesn’t work, copy the command written below, paste it in cmd and hit Enter. Hopefully, this will resolve the issue for you.

3] Repair your PC using Installation Media

Next up, let us try to repair your computer using Installation Media. This is something that you should do if the previous method of running SFC and DISM doesn’t work, simply because, it is lengthy. So, go ahead and try repairing your system files using Installation Media. Hopefully, this will do the job for you.

4] Troubleshoot in Clean Boot

You may face problems because of a third-party application. Since we don’t what that application is, try performing Clean Boot and narrow down your possible culprits by manually enabling processes. Once you know who the culprit is, all you have to do is remove it and your issue will be resolved.

5] Update Windows and BIOS

The issue can be caused due to a bug or incompatibility. You should check for Windows updates and install if available. Then, update your BIOS and see if that helps. Hopefully, your issue will be resolved.

6] Update all your drivers
